Many PC gamers have noticed that with Game Mode enabled, which should usually prioritise games and minimise background tasks to improve performance, many games actually encountered poorer frame rates, stutters and freezes. As the Guru3D website explains opens in new tab , there have been reports that games such as Call of Duty: Warzone and League of Legends have been encountering issues with Game Mode, while both AMD and Nvidia graphics cards can also be affected.

The process of turning off Game Mode in Windows 10 is pretty straightforward. To do this, open up the Start Menu and click the icon of a cog. We use the Internet for everything from sending a quick message to a friend to join our game to looking up how to get past a particularly difficult section of gameplay.

The downside, of course, is that web browsers especially Chrome can dominate system resources. Windows 10 Game Mode removes this obstacle. That said, if your computer is powerful enough, you might not notice any improvement at all. One more thing to bear in mind is that not all games are compatible with Game Mode. What this means is that when you launch a game, Game Mode is enabled by default.

Once enabled, Game Mode will kick in as soon as you launch a recognized game. If Microsoft releases an update in the future that allows you to individually enable Game Mode through a keyboard shortcut, it may have more use in games. While Game Mode is a mostly-beneficial feature that can and does improve performance, some users have reported errors that only occurred with Game Mode enabled.

Every time you run it. Please fix this Microsoft. Borderless you Muppet. Run your games in full screen borderless. Anyone know if I can record desktop or maps using game bar? I get a high frame rate but I find this helps stop some of the little stutters I get every now and then. Cant open game bar with Mass Effect Andromeda : any help. Why does not MS create a game mode application, which allows to add any game you want to support. Set all your games to run borderless. It's still full screen view but game bar will work.

Game mode landed on one of my desktop PCs and thinks that Chrome is a game, always popping up and capturing all keyboard input when I open chrome. I've managed to disable game mode through Settings but there seem to be some keyboard hooks left in the system and the lower case "g" on my keyboard no longer works.

USB keyboard, bluetooth keyboard, makes no difference. Game mode has hijacked the "g" key permanently and now my computer is useless despite having disabled game mode. I'm having to write this on a laptop that magically doesn't have this update yet.

While Game Mode is a mostly-beneficial feature that can and does improve performance, some users have reported errors that only occurred with Game Mode enabled. Some Microsoft updates have temporarily caused Game Mode to have the opposite effect and resulted in lower frame rates, but those were repaired quickly. However, there are anecdotal reports that Game Mode causes the system to slow down overall.

It also functions in the same way, by reducing background processes and focusing the resources on the game. You might see a few more frames than you would otherwise. Previously, you could toggle Game Mode in the Windows 10 and 11 Game Bar , but the setting has since moved. To do this now, you need to use the Windows 10 and 11 Settings menu.

While Game Mode won't make a huge difference for most PC games , if you're prone to heavy background task usage, or you're using a lower-end system without much overhead for games, Game Mode could be useful. It's unknown whether Game Mode has undergone any enhancements on the new version of the OS, Windows 11, but we expect it essentially has the same functionality.

If you turn it on, it will try to limit access of background tasks to your system resources, prioritizing gaming. If you turn it off, it will ensure background processes remain at the same priority. In testing, we haven't really found that it makes much difference either way, while trying to run games at the same time as rendering in Adobe Premier, for example. I think if you want to ensure that your system runs as expected, it might be worth simply turning it off.

Really useful. I wonder how can it apply to non-game apps such as a video player to increase fps? That one bounced! Disable background recording. I use it with World of Tanks without any issue for recording with game mode activated.

Game mode is useful on my low end PC.
